Prius gouging [Jul. 7th, 2008|09:36 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry

Let this be a lesson to you: Don't buy a new Prius in Florida.

A co-worker is trying to buy a new Prius because her SUV died (thankfully). All around town, dealers are charging a three to four thousand dollar premium for the cars. And by the way, the wait is two months, at the least.

Since she's not afraid to drive, she called around a bunch of dealers in other states (mostly throughout the Midwest). Guess what? None of them are charging the "gouge fee."

So unless you really liked getting fucked in the ass, buy a Prius from a Florida dealer.

She'd be better off driving a smartcar

especially if she doesn't need the storage space or seating... 2 seaters, for 13 K AND damned near the same milage you are going to get in a Prius in Florida.

She said she didn't even consider the Smart. She needs more than two seats.

One person's “gouging” is another person's “what the market will bear.” There's obviously a demand, and it's obvious that the supply doesn't match said demand (otherwise there wouldn't be a waiting list). And there are two ways of solving the problem: increase the supply to match the demand, or increase the price to lower demand to match the supply.

But okay, Florida dealers have kicked up the price $4,000. How much would it cost you to go out of state (Georgia is at least six to seven hours away by car), buy the car, drive it back to Florida, and register it in Florida? Also, don't forget you'll need to take time to do this (minimum of two days if the car is in Georgia and quite possibly longer) and the dealership will know if you are coming from out of state, thus putting them in a better barganing position (“you came all this way from South Florida and you are willing to walk out?”).
